Hammer Productions

Hammer Productions

Founded by businessman and comedian William Hinds in 1934, Hammer productions has progressed to be arguably one of the most successful British production companies of all time. The company has proven to be unique in the aspect that the core of its films has been based on a horror genre or a sub genre from horror. The company is now headed by Simon Oakes. It is also now a subsidiary of Exclusive Media. In the past, Hammer has had a strong union with Warner Brothers and this has proven to be a large success financially due to the large recognition.

The main sub genre's from horror are Gothic and Thriller. Their large influx of films produced between the 50s and the 70s are seen as the series of "Hammer Horror" this is because at this stage, their production was the dominant force in the horror market. Many of the films are hybrid genres, which primarily included horror but also consisted of Mystery, Paranormal and sometimes comedy.
Despite a decline in recent times, notable films such as The Woman In Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe has been produced. Hammer is most recognizable for its historic depictions of Frankenstein, with The Curse Of Frankenstein being produced in 1957, and The Evil Of Frankenstein in 1964.

Many have criticised Hammer productions for not helping to progress the Horror genre. This is because the moat recent films released have not exactly pushed the boundaries and have instead recycled tired cliches which are easily recognizable from the genre.

The films produced are often credited due to the tense atmosphere produced, as well as the thrilling story lines. This is emphasised well in the Horror Of Dracula, in 1958. Often credited as the best depiction of Dracula. In recent times, Woman in Black has evidently followed the ideal tense nature, which signifies its producers well.
As you can see from this trailer, the dark conventions from most horror film trailers are recognizable. Which shows Woman In Black to be a typical horror film which does not really push the boundaries. However, the music and the tense scenes does create an atmosphere of high suspense. This signifies Hammer Productions as a company well.
