In order to identify a particular group of people in which our film would suit, it is helpful to narrow down the type of audience we would expect from certain groups.
Age
Due to the fact that our protagonist is a teenage student who is struggling to comprehend with the stresses he is being confronted with in school life, it is likely our main focus for age would be a generally younger audience, potentially between the ages of 16-25. This is due to the fact that many of the people who fall into this age category are students and would therefore be able to relate to the struggles of the main character. However, the fact that violence is hinted at within the opening sequence connotes a sense of drama, and could potentially widen the scale for age group in which our film would fit in to.
Theorist categories
Looking at the Youngs & Rubicam ideology of audience, it is clear that two specific ideologies fit into the storyline of the film and could therefore relate to it. The Reformer is one, this is due to the fact that the storyline of the film is very much anti-establishment. The fact that the reformer is often seen as a realistic type of person could potentially prompt an idea that they are firm believers in conspiracy's, which bodes well with our storyline tackling the issue of corruption within hierarchies. The struggler could also potentially relate to the themes displayed within the film, due to the general attitudes displayed by the protagonist of discontent and depression. Within the Maslow hierarchy of needs, I feel the idea of escapism most appropriately relates to the film. This is due to the fact that those who crave escape are likely to be intrigued by a protagonist who is similar in this essence, and has been able to achieve this through the storyline.
General personality
It is likely that the target audience are constantly seeking thrill, this is due to the high suspense intended on being within the movie, and this would therefore relate to them well. In relation to our protagonist, it is likely the audience have busy lifestyles and are often feeling sorry for themselves, or potentially see themselves as a waster. This is due to the fact that the general storyline is based around this fact for the main character.
Occupation
The general occupation for the target audience is likely to be a student, or potentially unemployed. This is due to the fact that inspirational messages are signified through the fact that the protagonist is struggling with the stresses of school life, but senses a method of excitement and escapism, and therefore leads to a more interesting lifestyle.
Social Demographic
It could be interpreted towards sections of the middle class, due to the political themes involved with the storyline. This could therefore be of interest to the political views of middle class. The main demographic is working class due to the predominantly working class settings and context, relating to the working class well.
It is essential to establish a target audience guideline due to the fact that we are therefore able to promote the film to a necessary audience.
